Facts about Mother's Day

When is Mother's Day actually? In Germany it's fixed: this special day is alwayson the second Sunday in May celebrated. Even though Mother's Day falls on a different date each year, you can remember mid-May as a general guideline. Many other countries in Europe and the USA also celebrate on this day. In the United Kingdom, however, the fourth Sunday of Lent was chosen.

But how did this day come to be celebrated at all? It is clear that all our mothers deserve anday of honor deserve, on which their work and effort are especially appreciated. Mother's Day as it is celebrated today goes back to an initiative by an American women's rights activist. She wanted to honor her deceased mother with this day and above all draw attention to women's issues. Over time this grew into a large movement — and ultimately a national holiday in the USA. Later, other countries introduced this day as well.

Traditionally children give their mothers a small gift on this holiday, such as somethinghomemade or alovingly designed card. Flowers and sweets such as chocolate and pralines in a pretty heart tin are also popular gifts for Mother's Day.

By the way: Shortly after, on the public holiday of Ascension Day, Father's Day is celebrated in Germany. Also for your dad, handmade gifts for Father's Day a great idea.

But you can also design the box freely without any motif.

  2. Then you can really get started: Paint the box with your favorite acrylic color evenly or only in selected spots. Apply the paint to the entire outer side. Be sure to lift the lid and paint the now visible parts as well.

Make a bracelet

Required materials:

  • Beading cord or elastic cord

  • Needle with large eye

  • Beads

  • Scissors

Discover beads for crafting

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Surprise mom this year with a homemade bracelet. Get some beading cord or elastic cord and cut off a piece. It should be about twice the length of your wrist so there is enough room to adjust it later.

  2. Take your needle and thread the cord through the eye. Tie a small knot at the end of the cord so beads don't slip off later.

  3. Now you can be creative: Choose the prettiest beads and thread them onto the cord one after another. You can base the colors on mom's favorite colors. Letter beads are also a great idea for personalized bracelets.

  4. Test intermittently on your own wrist whether the bracelet is already large enough. Keep in mind that the recipient's wrist may be slightly larger or smaller.

  5. Once the right length is reached, tie a knot at the end. If you use elastic cord, you can knot the two ends tightly together and trim the excess. With beading cord it's better to leave the bracelet open and tie a knot when wearing it.

  6. All done! If you like, you can make the same bracelet again and wear it matching with your mom.

Soap pouring

Muttertagsgeschenke basteln | Seifen gießen

Required materials:

  • Protective mat or newspapers

  • Spoon

  • Bowls

  • Pot for a double boiler or microwave

  • approx. 300 g of raw soap (enough for three large soaps)

  • Soap mold

  • Soap colors

  • Fragrance oil

  • dried flowers (optional)

  • chiffon pouches or heart tin (optional)

Materials for soap making

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. The basis for soap pouring is raw soap. To process it further, it must be liquid. If you have a microwave, heat the soap for about three minutes. Alternatively, you can melt the raw soap in a double boiler on the stove while stirring.

  2. Once the soap is liquid, add a few drops of fragrance oil and soap color. Decide the amount yourself; two to three drops are usually sufficient. Stir vigorously with a spoon to distribute everything evenly.

  3. Then you should act quickly, because the soap will solidify again quickly. Pour the liquid soap into the silicone mold. If you want to add flowers, fill the mold only halfway first and after inserting the petals fill the rest.

  4. Now wait. Only after 30-60 minutes has the soap cured. Then you can remove it from the mold.

  5. If you like, you can pack the soap pieces into small chiffon pouches or a heart tin and tie them up. Your DIY Mother's Day gift is ready!

Paint a mug

Muttertaggeschenk basteln | Tasse bemalen

Required materials:

  • a white mug

  • porcelain pens

  • porcelain stickers (optional)

  • Gift wrapping (optional)

  1. Before you start painting your mug, rinse it well with warm water. Porcelain pens adhere better to a clean mug — and mom can use it right away.

  2. Now your creativity comes into play: Take the colorful porcelain pens and start drawing. Cheerful motifs, names or even a lettering — whatever you like. Be sure to leave the drinking area, i.e. the upper rim, free and only paint the outside of the mug. If you set it down on the table by the bottom rim, it's easier to paint.

  3. You can also embellish the painted mug with porcelain stickers. But beware, these are not dishwasher-safe.

  4. Once you're happy with your work, you can wrap it nicely. Maybe you'd even like to include mom's favorite tea or coffee and a card? Mother's Day can come!

For little & big artists: creative Mother's Day card with flowers

Muttertaggeschenk basteln | Das Kind bastelt eine Karte für den Muttertag

Required materials:

  • colored construction paper

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

  • Hole punch

  • pencil

  • Felt-tip pens

  • Natural raffia or thin ribbon

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. This Mother's Day card consists of several colorful paper parts to fold and cut out. Decide at the beginning which colors you want to use for your card.

  2. Begin by sketching a flower pot on the paper you chose for the main part. It's best to use a ruler. Repeat this process so that you end up with two identical pots.

  3. Then cut out this motif. On green paper, sketch three stems and leaves of different sizes. They may differ slightly in shape. Cut out the pre-drawn motifs and set them aside.

  4. Next are the petals for the card. For this, cut nine equally sized teardrop-shaped parts from your chosen paper. Then fold six of these parts lengthwise, thus halving them.

  5. Now glue two folded petals onto each of the three unfolded, flat parts. You get a tulip blossom by gluing only one half of the folded parts.

  6. Now it's time to glue together. Glue the stems, blossoms and leaves together and attach the resulting three tulips to one of the cut-out pots.

  7. Place the remaining pot on the other side so that the flowers are enclosed between the two layers. Glue the two parts of the card firmly together.

  8. You're almost done. Now use the hole punch to make a hole at the top edge of the pot on each side. Thread a piece of natural raffia through these holes and tie a bow.

  9. On the front of the pot you can write "For Mother's Day" or "For Mom". There's enough space on the back for a fitting saying. Your personal Mother's Day card is finished!
