Characters:

  • Kasper

  • Princess (or Gretel)

  • Witch (or a HABA hand-puppet monster)

  • a small parcel with a necklace

  • with two players: Dragon

Note: The story can be slightly adapted depending on which characters are available. A few suggestions are given above in parentheses. If two adults are playing, the dragon can also appear. Then only the ending of the play needs to be slightly changed.

The play to act out

Kasper:

Tri-tra-trullala, Kasper is back now. Hello children! Are you all here? Can anyone hear me?

(the children answer)

Kasper:

Oh, I'm so happy … all the children are here! Great! Awesome!! Simply fantastic! Because: Do you know who has a birthday today? No? The Princess! And that's why I have a present for her here. (bends down and pulls the parcel out from behind the curtain) Look: Isn't the parcel lovely?

(the children answer)

Kasper:

Oh, I think the Princess is already coming. But this is supposed to be a surprise! So I'll put the present here and hide. (exits)

Witch:

(comes onto the stage and looks around) Oh, what do I see there? That's a present! All alone … that's nice. I'll snap it up! (takes the present)

Princess:

(sings behind the curtain)

Witch:

Hmmm, I think someone is coming! So let's get out of here! (exits)

Princess:

Lalala, ah, what a lovely day! Hello children! Do you know what day it is today?

(the children answer)

Princess:

Yes, children, that's right! Today is my birthday. And shall I tell you something else? Kasper promised me a very special present. But I don't know where he is. Children, do you know where Kasper is? Will you help me call Kasper?

(the children call Kasper)

Kasper:

(comes onto the stage) Tri-tra-trullala, hello children! Did you call me?

(the children answer)

Kapser:

(sees the Princess and rejoices) Hello Princess! Happy birthday. Did you find your present?

Princess:

(surprised) Hello Kasper, which present?? I don't see a present.

Kasper:

But I put it there for you! Why don't you have it?

Princess:

There wasn't a present here. Or did you, children? Did you see a present?

(the children answer)

Kasper:

(upset) What did you say? A witch stole the present? What an impertinence!! (thoughtful) Hmm, let's think. Ha, I have an idea. Children, you call the witch and the Princess and I will hide. Princess, you stay in hiding. And when the witch comes, I'll take the present back from her. So everyone together: Witch! (Kasper and Princess exit, Kasper peeks around the curtain)

(the children call the witch)

Witch:

(comes onto the stage with the unwrapped parcel and a necklace) What? What? Who called me? Ah, there are children.

Kasper:

(jumps onto the stage) Ha! I've got you, you wicked witch! (grabs the parcel and the necklace, but the witch holds on to them)

Witch:

(angrily) Hey, let go ... I found the parcel here, so it belongs to me.

Kasper:

(shouts) No, that was the birthday surprise for the Princess, you dummy!

Witch:

(shouts) Same to you, dummy! Why didn't you just give it to the Princess, instead of leaving it here?

Kasper:

(very angry) Let go, or I'll call my friend, the dragon. Children, help me call the dragon. Dragon! Draaaaaaagon!

(the children call the dragon)

Witch:

(startled) What? You're friends with the dragon? Ahhh, help... (lets go of the parcel and the necklace and exits)

Princess:

(comes onto the stage) Thank you, children! You really helped Kasper. But you know what, Kasper, the witch was right: you're a dummy. You don't just leave a present lying in the middle of the path.

Kasper:

(in a small voice) Oh, yes, that's true. But I thought you'd come by soon. Oh well, never mind! Now everything is fine again. Here, dear Princess, so here is your birthday present.

Princess:

(rejoices) Thank you Kasper! But where is the dragon now?

Kasper:

Oh, I only said that to scare the witch away. Did you see how quickly she ran off?

Princess:

(laughs) Yes, that was funny! But now come with me to the castle. A huge birthday cake is already waiting for us there.

So, bye, children! See you next time!
