When can you go on vacation without a child?

Many parents sooner or later ask themselves the question:At what age is a child-free vacation possible – and sensible? The answer depends less on a specific age and more on the individual situation, the attachment, as well as the child's care and personality.

Child's age

  • Under 1 year: A vacation without a child is rarely advisable at this age. Infants need close contact with their primary caregiver.

  • 1–3 years: Possible, but only with familiar and stable care (e.g., by grandparents) and for a short duration.

  • From about 3 years: Many children can cope well with short separations, especially if they, for example, already attend kindergarten.

  • From 5 years: Usually no problem anymore – provided the child feels secure with the caregiver.

Attachment and emotional maturity

Besides age, the attachment to the caregiver and the emotional maturity play a decisive role. Children who have already built stable relationships with other caregivers – for example with grandparents or close family friends – can cope with separations much better.

Child's personality

Some children are outgoing and love to explore new things and make new friends. Especially if you send your child to a recreational program, these are the best conditions for the first vacation without your child. If the child is rather shy, it may happen that it suffers from severe homesickness and wants to go home. Then a few days with grandma and grandpa or with good friends may be a better choice. In a familiar environment, the child can enjoy the time and feel safe and well cared for.

Duration of the child-free vacation

  • Short trip (1–2 days): Ideal for 'testing'. A wellness weekend or city trip is a good start.

  • Medium-length vacation (3–7 days): Possible if the child is already used to being cared for by others.

  • Longer trips (over 1 week): Only recommended if the child already has experience with separation and feels comfortable.

What childcare options are available during vacation?

There are several options for spending the vacation without children. It is important that the childcare during the vacation is well organized.

The children also go on vacation:

Another option is to enable the children to have a vacation as well. Many tour operators offer children and youth trips. However, you should bear in mind that you or a representative must be reachable in case the child becomes ill or has to leave early. Another option is to place your child, for example, with the grandparents. There they can be pampered and thus also have a vacation.

When children travel alone or spend a few days with Grandma and Grandpa, the wardrobe trolley becomes a faithful companion. It helps them organize their things themselves, keep track of everything and take responsibility for their own luggage. That strengthens their self-confidence — and lets them start their next adventure a little more grown-up.

Children staying home alone:

If your children are already older and responsible, you might consider leaving your child at home alone. Make sure there is enough food and some cash so your child can take care of themselves. If necessary, you can ask a kind neighbor or friend to check in once a day.

Childcare at home:

If you decide to leave the children at home, you will need to arrange suitable and capable childcare for that period. Maybe the grandparents have the time and desire to care for the children in the familiar surroundings at your home?

On-site childcare:

If it's not that important to you to spend the entire vacation child-free, then childcare at the destination might be the perfect solution for you. Many hotels provide on-site childcare. It's important that your child isn't too shy and can accept care from an unfamiliar caregiver. You can also ask your babysitter from home if he or she would like to come along. That way you know your child is well looked after. You can then spend the evening together:

  • Tell your child early that you are planning a child-free holiday. This allows them to prepare and they won't be confronted with a fait accompli.

  • Explain to your child that you are looking forward to the time and don't feel guilty. Otherwise they may become insecure.

  • Arrange for a trustworthy caregiver that your child already knows.

  • Practice the absence – preferably where the child will be cared for during the holiday. Proceed step by step: First a few hours, then an overnight stay and finally the weekend.

  • Write down contact details such as the phone number, name and address of your accommodation for the caregiver.

  • Pack a small bag together with your child containing things they particularly like. Our cloth dolls make excellent best friends to help ease homesickness.
