Summer holidays at home – how to avoid boredom
Six weeks of holiday is a long time, especially when your friends are away. But there is no reason to be bored: someone is always available to play with and even in wet weather there is something to do.
Children's party in the garden:
In good weather your child can invite a few friends for a picnic in the garden or the park. Pack a few blankets, a chilled summer punch or colourful fruit spritzers, fruit and some snacks, and let the children romp about with balls or an inflatable paddling pool. Also have a few game ideas ready in case boredom sets in.
Cooking inspired by holiday destinations:
Didn’t manage to travel to Italy or France this summer? You can still bring the holiday into your kitchen by cooking dishes typical of those countries. Let your child choose a country and look in cookbooks or online to see what is eaten there. Plan an English day, a French day and a Spanish day. Shopping for and preparing the dishes will certainly bring on holiday feelings and boredom will soon be forgotten.
Make use of holiday activities:
During the summer holidays many municipalities or churches offer holiday activities. These are usually a wide range of options, from sport and crafts to drama and excursions. Some offers require registration or a small participation fee, others are free. Inform yourself in good time about what is available. For children it is also a good opportunity to meet new friends.
Sleeping outdoors:
Admittedly, that only works in good weather. But a garden is not necessarily required, since a mattress or sleeping mat will fit on most balconies. Your child will spend the afternoon planning their overnight adventure and gathering everything they need. And then: watching the stars, telling stories and listening to the sounds of the night.
