6 tips for clever parents and children
1. Tailored fit: How do I find the right hat size?
The right size to find is as simple as it is important. After all, who likes it when the hat keeps slipping into the eyes or presses on the head. And here's how: Place a measuring tape over the forehead and just above the ears and measure the head circumference. This corresponds to the hat size. In borderline cases, buy one size larger.
2. Warm and soft – which material does my child like?
Whether chunky knit wool, fluffy fleece made of polyester or soft jersey made of cotton: they're all suitable for good children's hats. Wool and thicker fleece qualities keep nicely warm; some kids who sweat therefore prefer cotton instead. The sensitive ones find wool or sometimes even synthetic fibers to be scratchy. Then material mixes, cotton, or a thinner fleece are recommended.
3. 80% of heat is lost through the head - is that true?
For generations it's been said that most of the body's heat is lost through the head. It's time to shelve that old hat: humans lose the same amount of heat through every uncovered body part. Hats are justified for that reason. Just like gloves for the hands and shoes for the feet, they are in cold weather the "heat keeper" for the head.
4. Does a cold, wet head really cause a cold?
The little one comes home without a hat again? Not necessarily a reason to worry: the next cold isn't automatic, because a strong immune system constantly fights off pathogens. The immune defense can be overwhelmed if your child is cold. That happens more quickly with wet hair, which causes chills in cool weather. Hats protect!
5. Headband or hat - which is better?
Let's be blunt: A headband is better than nothing. At least the ears are protected from the cold. Heat is still lost through the head. If children only headbands like them, don't get cold at the head and feel comfortable, the hat may well stay in the closet.
6. How can my child keep the hat on?
There is only one answer to the ultimate question about headwear: Try it out! Maybe your child finds the material unpleasant, they sweat, the hat slips or they don't like it. And if Mom and Dad prefer to let their hair blow in the wind, the little one probably isn't much into hats either.
We are convinced: For every head there is the perfect hat. Have fun choosing at your leisure.
