Recipe ideas for great birthday cakes

Cakes from creamed batter

Recipes for cakes made from creamed batter are especially suitable for children's birthdays. They are quick to make and don't need many ingredients - and you can customize them to your liking. Let's go!

Basic recipe for creamed batter cake

Required ingredients:

  • 250 g soft butter

  • 250 g sugar

  • 4 eggs

  • 500 g flour

  • 1 packet baking powder

  • 125 ml milk

Here's how:

  1. Many birthday cakes are basically a creamed batter cake. You can adapt this basic recipe however you like — or leave it in its simple form. First preheat your oven to 150 degrees (fan). Then grease your cake tin and dust it with flour - this prevents sticking later.

  2. In a mixing bowl, beat the soft butter and sugar with the whisk of your hand mixer for about 5 minutes. The mixture should become noticeably lighter and creamy.

  3. Then add the eggs one at a time. Stir each in for half a minute so that all ingredients combine well into the batter.

  4. Now the dry ingredients and the milk come into play: mix the flour with the baking powder. Add this mixture alternately with the milk to the batter until nothing remains.

  5. The creamed batter is ready. If you like, you can refine it now. Nuts, chocolate or fruit are suitable. With lemon juice and zest you can make a refreshing lemon cake. If you like it colorful, add a few drops of food coloring.

  6. Then fill the batter into the greased tin and bake it for 50 to 60 minutes. The toothpick test will tell you if it's done: stick a wooden skewer into the cake. If it comes out dry, the cake is ready.

Fun waffle cake

Backen für Kindergeburtstag | Kind isst Waffeln

Required ingredients: For the waffles:

  • 250 g flour

  • 125 g soft butter

  • 100 g sugar

  • 200 ml milk

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1 tsp lemon zest

  • Powdered sugar for dusting

For the cake cream:

  • 250 g whipping cream

  • 150 g quark

  • 100 g jam, e.g., cherry or raspberry

  • 2 packets vanilla sugar

  • 2 tbsp lemon juice

  • fresh berries

Here's how:

  1. With this recipe you can turn simple waffles into a great cake that your children will definitely love. First bake the waffles: Mix the butter with the sugar and gradually add the eggs.

  2. Then mix the flour and baking powder. Add this mixture alternately with the milk to the batter.

  3. Preheat your waffle iron and grease it. Then put two heaped tablespoons of batter on the waffle iron for each waffle and bake each waffle 1 to 2 minutes until golden brown. You should get 8 waffles in total.

  4. Then let the waffles cool well on a cooling rack.

  5. In the meantime, prepare the cake cream: using the whisk of your hand mixer whip the cream until stiff.

  6. Then add the quark, the jam as well as the vanilla sugar and lemon juice to the whipped cream and mix everything into a smooth mass.

  7. Then stack: place a waffle one after the other on a plate and spread them alternately with the cream until you have a layered waffle tower.

  8. The last layer ends with cream. Now place your fresh berries on top. Then dust your waffle cake with some powdered sugar. And the quick kids' birthday cake is ready!

  4. Then put the different portions of batter onto a deep baking tray lined with baking paper. This type of tray is also called a roasting pan.

  5. Take a fork and spread the colorful batter so that the colors blend into each other. Pull a few circles and waves, like with a marble cake.

  • 500 ml milk

  • 5 tbsp sugar

  • fresh fruit

Here's how:

  1. A fruit cake with a sponge base is suitable for all kids who love fresh fruit like cherries, strawberries or exotic fruits like mango and kiwi. You can make this recipe in no time.

  2. First cook a vanilla pudding. Mix two tablespoons of milk with the pudding powder and stir into a smooth mass. Heat the remaining milk in a small pot.

  3. As soon as the milk boils, take the pot off the heat. Stir the pudding into it with a whisk. Put the pot back on the stove and bring the pudding to a boil while stirring. This usually only takes a few minutes.

  4. Let the pudding cool well afterwards. Ideally place a piece of cling film directly on the pudding to prevent a skin from forming.

  5. In the meantime chop fresh fruit. Choose the varieties that the birthday child likes best.

  6. Then carefully take the sponge base out of the pack and place it on a cake plate. Spread the base with the cooled vanilla pudding.

  7. Now place the fresh fruit on top. Only candles are missing – then this kids' birthday cake is ready!

Themed cakes & decorative cakes

Butterfly cake

Backen für Kindergeburtstag | Schmetterlingskuchen dekoriert mit bunten Schokolinsen und Schokocreme

Required ingredients:

  • see basic creamed batter recipe

  • Food coloring

  • colored chocolate candies

  • Chocolate decorating pen

  • 250 g soft butter

  • 500 g powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Here's how:

  1. This sweet butterfly cake is easier to bake than you might think. First you need a creamed batter cake baked in a round tin. It's best to follow the HABA basic recipe for creamed batter. While the cake cools, you can prepare the buttercream for decorating.

  2. For this you need soft butter, some vanilla extract and finely sieved powdered sugar. Beat the butter and vanilla extract with the whisk of your hand mixer to a soft cream. This takes about 5 minutes.

  3. Then add the finely sieved powdered sugar spoon by spoon. It's important to sieve the powdered sugar first so no lumps form.

  4. Once you've worked the powdered sugar into the butter mixture, only a drop of food coloring of your choice is missing. For butterflies, delicate pastel shades are best.

  5. Then assemble: release your round creamed batter cake from the tin and cut it in half horizontally. Place the two halves together so that the rounded sides touch. This results in the shape of butterfly wings.

  6. Then spread the cake with your buttercream.

  7. Now it's time to decorate: dress your butterfly with colored chocolate candies or sugar sprinkles. Draw the antennae simply with a decorating pen.

  8. And your themed butterfly cake is ready!

Safari cake

Backen für Kindergeburtstag | Safari Torte dekoriert mit Löwen, Elefanten, Zebra, Giraffen, Affe

Required ingredients:

  • see basic creamed batter recipe

  • 1 jar raspberry jelly

  • 1 kg white fondant

  • Food coloring

  • some powdered sugar

  • some water

Here's how:

  1. Two round creamed batter cakes of different sizes serve as the base for this great birthday cake. Bake them as given in our basic recipe and let both cakes cool well.

  2. In the meantime take care of the safari animals. Unpack the fondant and cut off about 300 grams. Cut this portion into several small pieces. Color the pieces now with food coloring – as you want to design your animals. For example, a yellow piece becomes a lion, a gray piece an elephant. It's best to wear rubber gloves so your hands don't get colored.

  3. Then shape: using your fingers and tools like cutlery or toothpicks form funny safari animals. You can also focus only on the animal heads – whichever you prefer.

  4. Now prepare your cake. For this, cut your creamed batter cakes lengthwise with a large knife so that you have four cake layers in total. Spread these with half of the raspberry jelly. Stack the layers and spread the remaining jelly on the surface of the cake so that you end up with a fully covered cake.

  5. Now continue with the remaining fondant. Color it as well as the small pieces with food coloring and knead it well until the color is distributed. Then dust your work surface with some powdered sugar and take a rolling pin. Roll the fondant out very thinly.

  6. Now place the rolled-out fondant over the entire cake – it's best to use your forearms for this so it doesn't crack. Smooth the fondant with your hands until the whole cake is evenly covered. Simply remove excess with a knife.

  7. Now decorate: fetch your safari animals and position them wherever you like. Moisten the spot with a little water and press the animals lightly on. The water slightly dissolves the fondant and becomes sticky. This way you attach the animals in place.

  8. If you like, you can use more decorations like candies or buttercream. Design your themed cake as you please! One thing is certain: your birthday children will be amazed.

  2. Add 180 Milliliters of lukewarm water and olive oil and knead all ingredients with a dough hook at the highest speed for about three minutes until a smooth dough forms.

  3. Then cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let the dough rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes.

  4. In the meantime simmer the tomatoes, which you season with salt, pepper and oregano, in a pot for about five minutes.

  5. Now chop your toppings. Whether salami in thin slices, drained sweetcorn or bell pepper in small pieces – you are completely free here.

  6. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees (160 degrees fan) and grease your muffin tin well.

  8. Then spread your cooled tomato sauce over the dough, leaving the edges free.

  9. Now top your pizza dough with the toppings of your choice that you prepared earlier.

  10. Now roll the pizza dough up from the long side. Cut the resulting roll into 12 equally sized pieces and place the swirls in muffin cups.

Pizza

Required ingredients:

  • 200 g flour, type 550

  • 50 g semolina, durum wheat

  • 1/4 cube yeast

  • 160 ml water, lukewarm

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • ready-made tomato sauce

  • 1 tsp oregano, dried

  • Salt

  • 70 g sausage (chorizo), whole

  • 1 ball mozzarella (buffalo mozzarella)

Here's how:

  1. First, thoroughly combine flour, semolina and salt for the pizza dough. Dissolve the yeast in the warm water, let it rest for 5 minutes and then add to the flour mixture. Knead the ingredients with the dough hook of the hand mixer, in the stand mixer or by hand until an elastic dough forms, this takes about 10 minutes. If the dough is too firm, add a little warm water, if the dough is too runny add a little flour. Only then knead in the olive oil. Wrap the dough in cling film or cover with a dish towel and let rise for at least 30 minutes.

  2. While the dough rises, cut out Christmas shapes from baking paper such as stars or fir trees.

  3. In the meantime season the ready-made tomato sauce to taste with a little garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper, oregano and a touch of thyme and rosemary.

  4. Brush a baking sheet generously with good heat-stable olive oil and preheat the oven to 300 °C (top and bottom heat). Knead the dough again by hand and roll it out on a floured board roughly to the size of the tray from the middle outwards. The dough should be rolled out about 3 mm thick.

  5. Place the paper templates on the dough and carefully cut around them with a knife. Knead the leftover dough together and roll it out again. Shape unused dough into small balls and bake pizza rolls from them.

  6. Place the cut dough on the tray and brush it only very thinly with the homemade tomato sauce. Slice the mozzarella and place it on the pizza. Cut the chorizo into fine pieces and distribute on the pizza. Bake for about 10 minutes. Tip: delicate items like fresh herbs e.g. oregano should be added only after baking.

Tip:Prepare the pizza dough the evening before the pizza meal and let it rest covered in a bowl overnight. This not only makes the pizza-baking day more relaxed but also makes the yeast dough light and fine-pored.
