O•O Hack: Foldable DIY playhouse made from cardboard

There it is, a giant shipping box, and you don't know what to do with it? How about a playhouse for the kids? That way the box is perfectly upcycled and in the end you'll have a versatile piece of play furniture, that cost almost nothing, but provided lots of fun while crafting together done. What's more, the DIY house can be folded up to save space and put away.

Our playhouse in the video we made using only tape. Of course the kids can paint it colorfully, stick things on it – whatever you want and feel like.

You need:

  • 1 large moving or shipping box

  • 1 additional piece of cardboard

  • utility knife

  • tape (preferably thick duct tape or similar)

  • if you like: paints & decorations of all kinds

Here's how:

  • Place the box on the floor so that the opening faces to the side and the longer side of the box is on top.

  • Cut off this top side including the flap and keep it. This will later become one half of the roof.

  • Reinforce with tape all outer edges of the box that meet at angles by completely covering them from the outside.

  • Now it's the roof's turn. Cut two equally sized pieces from the saved box side and from another piece of cardboard. Make sure that together they form the roof pitch you want.

  • Connect both parts at the roof slope with tape on the outside and inside.

  • Then tape the roof and the playhouse together.

  • Now the little house is basically finished. But to make it foldable, lay it on its 'belly', that is, on the entrance side.

  • Cut the middle of the back completely and pull the cut further through the house floor. To ensure the box folds properly at the end, it's important that the cut runs exactly down the middle. Next, cut along the edge where the back and the floor meet.

  • Check whether the back and bottom flaps can fold well outwards. Tape the flat-folded box together at the cut edges with the adhesive tape.

  • Open the playhouse and also reinforce the inner 'side seams' with tape.

  • Done! Whenever you want to put the DIY house away, you can easily fold it up. Have fun crafting and playing!
