The right hobby

Crafting, playing football, learning an instrument, exploring nature, or fitness - the range of leisure activities available to children and adolescents today is limitless. A hobby can be defined as a favorite activity or pastime that a person pursues intensively and voluntarily. Music and sports groups in particular are important for children's development. For example, music promotes cognitive and emotional development, while sports have a positive effect on children's motor skills. Incidentally, children also learn to be reliable and to take responsibility. Above all, a hobby should be fun. In addition, as educators and developmental psychologists advise, it should encourage children but not overwhelm them. And most importantly: it's not about what the parents want. Just because mom enjoys horseback riding doesn't mean the daughter has to like it. And sending a child who isn't musical to weekly piano lessons is also not very sensible. But how do children find out what they enjoy? A test to spark interests can provide the necessary initial impulse. Many clubs offer trial sessions where the child can get a first impression. It usually becomes clear quickly whether a child enjoys a hobby or not.

Growing with the hobby

If your child has chosen a hobby, accessories for it can be acquired gradually, for example for birthdays or Christmas. Pursuing a hobby requires perseverance, but it also promotes your child's self-awareness and self-competence. Mastering an instrument bit by bit, learning artistic techniques step by step, and taking a sport seriously allow your child to grow personally. Whatever activity your child pursues - it is almost always social skills that are particularly fostered through active group interaction. On the one hand people measure themselves against each other, but at the same time they learn from one another. And above all: pursuing a goal together.

Too many hobbies are counterproductive

Despite all the enjoyment of leisure activities: school must not be neglected. Therefore a child should not pursue too many hobbies, as these are supposed to provide relaxation and a counterbalance to the demanding school day. Too many extracurricular activities overwhelm children and become a significant source of stress. This naturally also affects concentration, for example in class, and quite a few children neglect their homework due to a lack of time. This can have negative consequences such as loss of appetite, exhaustion, irritability, sleep disorders, stomachaches and headaches. Truly free time is therefore essential for children's physical and mental regeneration.
