Appointments and activities – What’s planned in the 19th month?
Get a potty or toilet seat: In the past the common rule was: children are dry by two years. Today it is known that every child has their own pace. But if your child is among those who become dry early, it is good to be prepared. If your child signals when they need to go, you can slowly start potty training. And even if it takes a few more months: just put the potty in the bathroom. That way your child can get to know it and understand what it is for. If your child is more interested in the toilet because they are familiar with it from you parents, a toilet seat is the right choice.
Important developmental milestones in the 19th month
Energy:Toddlers seem to have limitless energy. The favorite activity now is romping and dancing. Outdoors is the best place for little ones to satisfy their urge to move.
Balance: At 19 months the sense of balance in toddlers is developed enough that they can effortlessly squat and stand up again. They can carry objects while walking.
Mobility: Just learned, walking already becomes secondary again. For many children, Bobby Cars and other ride-on toys are very popular now. Most toddlers move forward quite well – steering just needs to be learned.
Fine motor skills: Small items like pencils can now be held and moved so precisely that first pictures or scribbles appear. Towers are built from building blocks and are often knocked down again for fun. Sorting and shape-sorting toys remain engaging.
Rest breaks: Depending on whether your child still takes a midday nap or has several short rest breaks, many toddlers now enter a period where they need fewer pauses. Most children still take a midday nap, but it is often shorter now. However, it is quite possible that phases will return in which your child needs more sleep again.
