When do babies start rolling over?

Ab wann drehen sich Babys | Image

A baby’s mobility develops at very different rates, so it’s hard to give an exact time when a baby can deliberately roll from tummy to back and back again. About half of babies manage this by six months; the rest need a little longer.

Especially curious babies usually roll a little earlier and are keen to become more mobile in order to copy other children. Other babies skip rolling and move straight on to sitting or crawling. It’s easier to roll once the arm, back and neck muscles have had a chance to get stronger.

Rolling, scooting and discovering new perspectives

After the first six months babies become more mobile almost every day: they happily roll from left to right on their play mats, move their arms and legs in a coordinated way and increasingly try to reach for and grasp toys. At some point the play mat is no longer enough: the little ones want to explore the whole room and begin to pull themselves forward, often very wobbly and unevenly. Each child has its own technique. Some babies start crawling straight away. Driven by natural curiosity, they are motivated to discover ever more and to expand their mobility.

Other babies, by contrast, skip the crawling stage and want to walk straight away. But that involves a lot: standing securely, balancing the body and finally shifting weight — all these steps need plenty of practice and patience. Toddlers are tireless! At roughly 15 months they typically take their first steps and soon stride around the world beaming with pride. And again: each child learns to walk at their own pace and in their own way.

How rolling, crawling and walking can be encouraged

Supporting mobility with activity gyms and play arches

A softly padded play mat is the ideal surface for mastering the first roll. Colourful play elements on the mat or activity gyms stimulate the urge to move even further.

Encouraging mobility with soft toys

The cute roll-along toys make babies mobile almost by themselves: the air-filled rolls with many play features are rolled around the room and provide plenty of chances to explore, be amazed and play.

Encouraging mobility with push walkers

When learning to walk, sturdy push walkers with colourful details that invite discovery and play are helpful. With extra storage for favourite toys the walker quickly becomes the favourite companion!
