Sustainability at HABA
For HABA, the conservation of natural resources is the focus in every step of our work. This applies both to the selection of materials and to all production processes used. One demonstration of this is, among other things, our PEFC seal. Since 2010 we have been labeling our wooden toys with it. The beech and birch wood used comes from sustainable forestry. We thus support the preservation of the ecological balance in the forests and contribute to sustainably improving forest use and forest management.
Environmentally friendly production
In addition, we continuously optimize the framework conditions of our production, implement environmentally friendly processes and improve the technologies used. We determine how much material is used and how high the emissions and waste quantities are. A modern energy management is as a matter of course for us as the further development of our machines and buildings from an ecological perspective. As the first German toy manufacturer, HABA already passed the eco-audit in 1999 and has since relied on a continuous environmental management according to DIN EN ISO 14001:2015.
Modern energy management
We have a energy management system, which is certified according to DIN EN ISO 50001:2018. This standard describes the requirements for our company to establish, operate and continuously improve an energy management system. Specifically, we aim to continuously improve all energy-related performance of the HABA group of companies. This also includes increasing energy efficiency and optimizing our own energy use.
Energy management captures all energy flows in the company, evaluates them and offers suggestions for energy savings and efficient use. Responsible handling of energy is an essential part of our actions within the scope of our building services engineering and the expansion of office and production space – this applies to all locations of the HABA group of companies.
Continuous environmental management
Our environmental management system is certified to ISO 14001:2015. We analyze environmental influences and environmental impacts of our company and identify improvement potentials that we implement step by step. It is important to us, in all work steps, to practice sustainable environmental protection. And we have set ourselves the goal of becoming much better. How do we want to achieve this? By specifically training our employees to further foster their environmental awareness. If we do not manufacture a product ourselves, it comes from long-standing partners whom we trust and from whom we know that they also work to high environmental standards. When shipping our items we use the most environmentally friendly and recyclable packaging material possible – and only as much of it as is really necessary. Within the framework of our environmental policy, we ensure that as few pollutants as possible are emitted and to conserve resources as much as possible.
Environmental protection and sustainability in building technology
Recycling of wood residues, use of rainwater for sanitary facilities, air conditioning of office spaces through ground heat exchangers, electricity generation through photovoltaic systems, nature-oriented open spaces and facades, green roofs – the list of our Measures to protect the environment is long. And they concern all members of the HABA corporate family, because we do not only pull together when it comes to environmental awareness. That all applicable environmental laws and standards are observed is for us not an obligation, but a matter of course.
Sustainable action is a central aspect of the Corporate philosophy – also the office building "Leschenhof", completed at the end of 2012, stands in this tradition and was awarded the Gold certificate by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). This represents a voluntary national and international standard for the classification of environmentally friendly, resource-efficient and sustainable buildings . Approximately 60 criteria from the fields of ecology, economy, socio-cultural and functional aspects, technology as well as processes and location are included in the assessment. The office building of the HABA corporate family fulfills the assessment criteria to 84.6 percent and thus ranks among the top 20 buildings certified Gold in Germany. The certificate was presented in autumn 2014.
Environmental protection is local animal protection
Environmental protection at HABA also finds expression in the protection of native animals.The HABA corporate family has many tall buildings at its Bad Rodach site, such as silos for wood shavings or a high-bay warehouse. There we have installed nesting boxes that are used year after year by kestrels, common swifts and other birds. In addition, the hedges that border the company parking lots provide an optimal habitat for smaller bird species and many other animals. As a result, HABA is home to a total of 24 different bird species on the company premises and thus helps to protect the populations of the animal species found here.
