Whittling with children - but safely!

Turn a piece of wood into a work of art!

It's best to show your kids Step by step and cut by cut, how they need to guide the blade of the HABA carving knife, remove shavings or create fine patterns in the wood. And the best part: With every cut the little makers become more confident and creative. Bring a piece of wood to life together!

Pay razor-sharp attention

Carving takes practice – and the great thing is: It's even more fun together! When children work with the help of their parents, they learn how to hold the knife correctly, how to carve safely and which fingers should always stay out of the cutting direction. This is how carving with children works best: Sit comfortably, find a solid surface – a piece of wood or a tree stump – and always carve away from the body. Small, steady movements are the key: Not with force, but with feeling!

Which wood is suitable?

So you don't go down the wrong path when choosing wood, we have a few small tips for you: For carving with children or inexperienced people fresh, soft wood is best. It is slightly damp, easy to cut, and doesn't splinter as easily. Hazel wood for example is tough and at the same time supple when carving – ideal for walking sticks or barbecue skewers. Also Willow wood is wonderfully soft, can be shaped easily and is great for first carving attempts. And the classic among carving woods is linden wood. It is light and fine-grained, which is perfect for finer patterns. When learning to carve, avoid old, hardened wood if possible, because it is hard to cut and can easily split.

You can shape your grill items with a knife by scoring them before skewering.

It's very easy to make diagonal slits. These spots become nice and crispy. But be careful not to cut the sausage all the way through, otherwise it will fall apart and end up in the campfire.

One option is to make crosswise cuts on the ends. This makes the sausage look funny and makes it easier to take a bite.

So, out of the house, into nature – get to the wood! Let the shavings fly!
