From what age can you go on vacation without your child?

Many parents sooner or later ask themselves the question: 'At what age is a child-free vacation possible - and sensible?' The answer depends less on a fixed age and more on the individual situation, the attachment as well as the child's care and personality.

Child's age

  • Under 1 year: A vacation without the child is rarely advisable at this age. Infants need close contact with the primary caregiver.

  • 1–3 years: Possible, but only with familiar and stable care (e.g. by grandparents) and for a short duration.

  • From around 3 years: Many children can handle short separations well, especially if they, for example, already attend kindergarten.

  • From 5 years: Usually no problem anymore – provided the child feels secure with the caregiver.

Attachment and emotional maturity

Besides age, above all the attachment to the caregiver and the emotional maturity play a decisive role. Children who have already built stable relationships with other caregivers – for example grandparents or close family friends – can cope with separations much better.

Child's personality

Some children are outgoing and love exploring new things and making new friends. Especially if you send your child to a holiday camp, these are the best conditions for the first child-free vacation. If the child is rather shy, it may happen that they suffer from severe homesickness and want to go home. Then a few days at Grandma and Grandpa's or with good friends might be a better choice. In a familiar environment the child can enjoy the time and feel safe and well cared for.

Duration of the child-free vacation

  • Short trip (1-2 days): Ideal for 'testing'. A wellness weekend or city break is a good introduction.

  • Medium-length vacation (3-7 days): Possible if the child is already used to being cared for by others.

  • Longer trips (over 1 week): Only recommended if the child already has experience with separation and feels comfortable.

What childcare options are available for vacation time?

There are several options for spending a vacation without children. It is important that the Childcare during the vacation is well organized.

The children also travel:

Another option is to allow the children to go on vacation as well. Many organizers offer children and youth trips. However, you should bear in mind that you or a representative must be reachable if the child falls ill or needs to leave early. Another option is to place your child, e.g. with the grandparents. There they can be pampered and thus also have a vacation.

When children travel alone or spend a few days with grandma and grandpa, the wardrobe trolley becomes a faithful companion. It helps them organize their things themselves, keep track of their belongings and take responsibility for their own luggage. That boosts self-confidence – and lets them start their next adventure a little bit taller.

Children stay home alone:

If your children are already older and responsible, you can consider leaving your child at home alone. Make sure there are enough groceries and some cash so that your child can take care of themselves. If necessary, you can ask a kind neighbor or friend to check once a day.

Childcare at home:

If you decide to leave the children at home, you need to arrange suitable and capable childcare for that period. Maybe the grandparents have the time and willingness to care for the children in the familiar surroundings at your home?

On-site childcare:

If it's not so important to you to spend the entire vacation without children, then childcare at the holiday destination may be the perfect solution for you. Many hotels arrange childcare on site. It is important here that your child is not too shy and is able to accept care from unfamiliar caregivers. You can also ask your babysitter from home whether he or she would like to come along. That way you know your child is well looked after. You can then spend the evening together:

  • Tell your child well in advance that you are planning a vacation without them. This allows them to prepare and prevents them from being confronted with a fait accompli.

  • Explain to your child that you are looking forward to the time and don't feel guilty. Otherwise they may become uncertain.

  • Arrange reliable childcare that the child already knows.

  • Practice being apart - preferably where the child will be cared for during the vacation. Proceed step by step: first a few hours, then overnight, and finally for the weekend.

  • Write down contact details such as the phone number, name and address of your accommodation for the caregiver.

  • Pack a small bag together with your child with things they particularly like. Our Cloth dolls as best friends are excellent for easing homesickness.
