Everyday life with a dog and a baby – this is how it works

Time for changes: Spatial changes such as the nursery, the stroller, or the changing table are part of having a baby. Give your dog the opportunity to get used to these things and make it clear to him from the start that, for example, the baby cot and play mat are off-limits to him.
Super noses: Dogs are known for their keen noses. In fact, they often smell the hormonal changes from pregnancy before the owner herself is certain from a pregnancy test. Whether a dog understands that the pregnancy ends with the 'sudden' arrival of a baby is unclear — but the situation definitely won't take your dog completely by surprise.
Family hierarchy: The clearer the hierarchy within the family, the better dogs adapt to the new situation. Dogs that know their place in the family hierarchy sometimes show a strong protective instinct during the pregnancy and later extend it to the baby.
Maintain routine: If possible, your dog should be allowed to keep its familiar place for eating and sleeping. Dogs that are driven away from their usual spot may easily question their place in the hierarchy and might try to 'fight' for a place above the baby.
Familiar scent: If you are not giving birth as an outpatient, dad can perhaps bring a worn baby onesie home for your dog to sniff — that way the baby won't be completely unfamiliar to your dog when arriving from the hospital.

Try not to leave the dog and baby alone together
Integrate the dog into everyday baby routines as much as possible
Do things together with dog and baby: walking, breastfeeding & feeding, etc.
Extra cuddle time for your dog
Pay attention to hygiene. Wash hands, wipe surfaces and vacuum a little more often
Keep an eye out for signs of allergies
