Appointments and activities – What's happening in the 24th month?

• Meeting other children: When in contact with other toddlers, children increasingly engage with each other. Whereas the little ones previously mostly played side by side, communication now begins to take place. Through interaction with other children, your little one learns social interaction. They learn to share and to express themselves. Playgroups or afternoons at the playground are a good opportunity to bring your child into contact with peers – and parents have a chance to exchange experiences.

• Celebrate a child's birthday: Your baby will turn two this month! That's a reason to celebrate. In nice weather you can spend the day in the park or garden. A visit to the local swimming lake will probably also please your little one. In bad weather, you can simply make yourselves comfortable indoors. With delicious cake and pretty decorations, everyone enjoys the day – and hopefully your toddler especially.

Important developmental milestones in the 24th month

• Language development:Your toddler's vocabulary now includes up to 150 words. A toddler is now able to recognize objects and properties and to name them. The passive vocabulary is much larger, and even if your baby does not communicate themselves, they understand much more of what you say.

• Self-confidence: The toddler has acquired a lot of skills to be proud of – which is why they also become more self-confident and continue to strive for independence. In the 24th month, children are often somewhat more self-centered and frequently use words like 'I' or 'mine' to make clear what belongs to them.

• Tantrums:Smaller tantrums are still not uncommon. At 24 months the defiant phase is drawing nearer and toddlers can sometimes react a bit more strongly when they don't get their way.

• Self-awareness: At two years, your child's self-awareness develops more and they can now recognize themselves in the mirror.

• Motor skills: Your child is making great progress in movement and motor skills. They become more agile and confident in their movements, can walk and climb better. Their feet roll off properly when walking. When you play with a ball, your child can even catch it a few times already.

Two exciting and eventful years with your baby are over. You have experienced many milestones together, a wealth of lovely memories collected and have become a real little family. Even though it can be challenging for parents at times, the time has flown by.
