It's a sunny afternoon in Kullerbü and Paul has arranged to meet his friends to play. He's already waiting at their meeting point, the colorful windmill, when his friend, Kira the cat, comes rolling up quickly. She's been rushing to be punctual, but she didn't quite make it. "I'm sorry I'm late," Kira pants and has to catch her breath.
"What shall we play today? Maybe tag?" asks Paul. While Kira is still thinking, a large flock of birds flies very close over their heads. "Spring is here, spring is here!" they chirp excitedly as they circle around. And just as quickly as they came, they fly off again.
Paul and Kira the cat are left puzzled. "Come on, let's go look for spring together!" Paul suggests. "Yes!" Kira exclaims.
First they roll to the pond where the little brave green frog lives. If spring can be found anywhere, it's surely at the pond, right? "Hello, have you seen spring?" calls Paul when they arrive at the pond. But the frog is in quite a hurry and has no time to answer them. "I have to go... to the big tower... practice parachute jumps," he mumbles, "now in spring that's just wonderful!" And with that he hops away.
"What's gotten into everyone today?" Paul wonders. No sooner has he said that than a loud rattling and clattering sounds in the sky. That can mean only one thing: one of the cheeky blue mice is taking another joyride over Kullerbü in her airplane. Paul and Kira the cat look up excitedly and squint. And sure enough: a mouse flies by at high speed just below the clouds — towing a banner with a message behind her. "HOORAY, SPRING IS HERE!" is written on it in big letters.
Apparently everyone has already seen spring, only Paul and Kira haven't. Disappointed, they roll on and a little later they meet the small brown dog who is trotting along the street at a leisurely pace. "Hello," Paul greets the dog cheerfully, "have you perhaps seen spring?" "Of course," says the dog, grinning at the two. "Shall I tell you where you can find it?" "Yesssss," Paul shouts immediately.
"Spring is everywhere. You just have to look very closely... and listen!" answers the dog and trots cheerfully on. Again Paul and Kira are left puzzled and then slowly roll in the opposite direction. And suddenly they see it: on both sides of the path the first delicate flowers have opened, which smell wonderful. And the foliage on the trees shines a bright green.
And not only that: suddenly they can hear cheerful birdsong and the buzzing of busy bees everywhere. "So the dog was right after all," Paul finally says. "Spring really is everywhere."
