Appointments and activities – What's planned for the 20th month?

  • Playdough:Although 20-month-old toddlers cannot yet shape figures by kneading, many children that age still enjoy handling soft playdough. Especially when the weather isn't cooperating, you can enjoy the pleasant feeling of kneading with your child and pass the time with colorful children's playdough.

  • Excursion into nature:For child and parents there is nothing better than spending time together outdoors. Here the progress in walking and motor skills can be tested. There is always something new to discover: little crawling beetles are just as exciting as a stick that is found — and has to be taken home. In nice weather you can plan an afternoon in the woods or park and aPicnicdo. A picnic basket can hold drinks and snacks.

Important developmental milestones in the 20th month

  • Fine motor skills:The little ones are becoming increasingly dexterous with their hands. Clear progress is often noticeable, especially when putting on and taking off clothes as well as during eating or drawing.

  • Communication:Children at 20 months can communicate both verbally and through gestures and facial expressions. If your child wants an object, they will let you know verbally or nonverbally.

  • Ball and Finger games: Motor skills are now so well developed that toddlers enjoy playing with balls and can already throw or kick them quite reliably.Finger games are also very popular with many 20-month-old toddlers.

  • Language:Simple word combinations are well understood. Some toddlers now begin to string words from a familiar context together and thereby form short 'sentences' themselves.

  • Memory:Babies and toddlers are increasingly able to remember experiences. They often communicate — with hands and feet — what they experienced the day before or at an earlier time.

  • Imagination:The imagination of 20-month-old toddlers is developed enough that many children often play with imaginary objects and invent their own stories and sequences of events.
