Sustainability at HABA
HABA is committed to a Conservation of natural resources – both in the selection of materials and in the production processes used. One example of this is our PEFC seal. We have been labeling our wooden toys with it since 2010. Because the beech and birch wood used comes from sustainable forestry. In this way we support the preservation of the ecological balance in the forests and contribute to improving forest use and forest care.
Certified production
Furthermore, we continuously optimize the framework conditions of our production and improve the technologies used. In doing so, we determine how much material is used and how much waste is generated. A modern energy management system is as self-evident to us as the ecological development of our machines and buildings. As the first German toy manufacturer, HABA already passed the eco-audit in 1999 and has since relied on a continuous environmental management according to DIN EN ISO 14001:2015.
Continuous environmental management
Our environmental management system is certified according to ISO 14001:2015. We analyze environmental aspects and environmental impacts of our company and identify potential improvements that we implement step by step. And we have set ourselves the goal of becoming much better by specifically training our employees to further their environmental awareness. If we do not manufacture a product ourselves, we work with long-standing partners and take into account, among other things, quality, compliance and environmental requirements when selecting them. We also continuously review opportunities to optimize our use of materials and energy.
Our certifications
PEFC
We have been PEFC-certified since 2010. The certification helps us to document the origin of wood and paper materials in a verifiable way and to systematically implement the requirements for a certified supply chain. PEFC is an internationally recognized certification system that defines requirements for responsible forest management and the traceability of materials along the supply chain.
FSC
Since 2025 we have also been FSC®-certified. Many of our products carry the FSC® label. The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is an internationally recognized certification system for responsible forest management. The FSC® system defines environmental, social and economic requirements for forest management as well as requirements for the traceability of materials along the supply chain.
Modern energy management
We have an energy management system, which is certified according to DIN EN ISO 50001:2018. This standard describes the requirements for our company to implement, operate and continuously improve an energy management system. Specifically, we aim to to continuously improve all energy-related performance across the Habermaass group of companies. This also includes increasing energy efficiency and optimizing our own energy use.
The energy management captures all energy flows within the company, analyzes them and offers suggestions for energy savings and efficient use. Responsible handling of energy is an essential part of our actions within the framework of our building services and the expansion of office and production spaces.
Innovative building technology
Recycling of wood waste, use of rainwater for sanitary facilities, air conditioning of office spaces via ground-source heat exchangers, electricity generation from photovoltaic systems, nature-oriented outdoor areas and facades, green roofs – these measures are important to us. For us, complying with all applicable environmental laws and standards is not merely an obligation, but a matter of course.
Protection of native animal species
The Habermaass group of companies has several tall buildings at its Bad Rodach site, such as silos for wood shavings and a high-bay warehouse. We have installed nest boxes there that are used year after year by common kestrels, common swifts and other birds. Our grounds are designed to be close to nature in many ways: ponds, flower meadows, traditional orchard meadows and hedges of sloe, hawthorn and blackthorn provide habitat for numerous bird species and promote biodiversity.
