Appointments and activities – What's coming up in the 22nd month?

Check shoe size: At 22 months, children's feet often grow quite quickly – sometimes up to two centimeters per month. To ensure the feet still fit comfortably in the shoes, you should regularly check whether the children's shoes still fit. When buying shoes, make sure to measure the shoe size correctly and choose good quality: A flexible outsole allows children to roll their foot. In the sandbox or at home on the carpet, toddlers are still best off barefoot.

Important developmental milestones in the 22nd month

  • Walking: The child's movements and posture become increasingly secure and more upright. At 22 months, most toddlers walk with less of a wide stance and no longer have an arched back. When walking, they now place their feet increasingly parallel next to each other.

  • Hearing/Vision: Playing with building blocks not only promotes dexterity, but also trains hearing and vision. By striking the blocks together or rubbing them, toddlers become sensitive to different sounds and volumes. Colors, shapes and small details train the vision.

  • Fine motor skills: Fitting together, stacking or pulling objects such as building blocks or other motor skills toys is no problem for most children now. It trains dexterity and the coordination of eyes and hands.

  • Understanding: Two-part requests can now be understood. However, if tasks are too difficult and cannot be completed, this can end in frustration and anger.

  • Imitation: Toddlers learn a lot by copying: Whether parents, other children or animals – through imitation the little ones adopt certain behaviors.

  • Independent play: Toddlers can now occupy themselves alone for a certain amount of time: They play with building blocks or look at a picture book – but they are also happy when someone joins them.

  • Demands: Gradually it increasingly happens that your child makes demands. Their own will becomes increasingly pronounced.
