Summer holidays at home – how to avoid boredom
Six weeks of holiday is a long time, especially when your friends are away. But there is no need to be bored: there is always someone to play with and even when it rains there is plenty to do.
Children's party in the garden:
In fine weather your child can invite a few friends for a picnic in the garden or the park. Pack some blankets, a chilled summer punch or colourful fruit spritzers, some fruit and a few snacks, and let the children run around with balls or an inflatable paddling pool. Have a few game ideas to hand in case boredom sets in.
Cooking inspired by holiday destinations:
Didn’t manage to travel to Italy or France this holiday? You can still bring the holiday home to your kitchen by cooking dishes typical of those countries. Let your child choose a country and look in cookbooks or online to see what people eat there. Plan an English day, a French day and a Spanish day. Shopping for and preparing the dishes will certainly create holiday feelings and boredom will soon be forgotten.
Make use of holiday activities:
During the summer holidays many municipalities and churches offer holiday programmes. These usually include a wide range of activities, from sport and crafts to drama and outings. Some activities require registration or a small fee, others are free. Find out about the offers in good time. For children it is also a great way to make new friends.
Sleeping outdoors:
Admittedly, that only works in good weather. But you do not necessarily need a garden, as a mattress or sleeping mat will fit on most balconies. Your child will spend the afternoon planning their overnight adventure and gathering everything they need. And then: looking at the stars, telling stories and listening to the sounds of the night.
