Games for the car ride for children aged 2 and up

If you're going on vacation with your 2-year-olds, they'll definitely enjoy simple and entertaining games and toys that keep them in good spirits:

The Quiet Game

How it works:

1. This car game is perfect when things get a bit wild in the backseat. One player, usually one of you parents, suddenly shouts: "The Quiet Game begins in 10, 9, 8, 7..."

2. Once the countdown is over, no one may make a sound. The radio is turned off and neither speaking nor laughing is allowed.

3. If after a long time there's still no noise, you can try to make your fellow players laugh by making funny faces

4. Whoever makes a sound first loses!

Car trip games for children aged 3 and up

Challenge your 3-year-olds on the car ride to holiday – for example with games that require them to concentrate or to be creative themselves:

I spy with my little eye

How it works:

1. This classic car game is rightly one of the most popular children's games. It works best in traffic jams or when you designate the interior of your car as a play zone. First decide who starts.

2. The player looks around and picks an object. They remember it and keep it secret. If you have a pen and paper, you can write down the chosen object.

3. Then the player says, "I spy with my little eye something that is..." They then choose the color of the selected object.

4. Now the other players may guess what the player means. Answers may only be "yes" or "no". If the other players take a long time to find the solution, the player gives additional hints.

5. Only when the other players have guessed the object being sought is the round over.

Create a co-pilot route

From now on, little co-pilots are always up to date on the journey and the endless question "Are we there yet?" is a thing of the past. How?On their "co-pilot route" the kids play through all travel stations in miniature– and thus see how they get closer to the destination step by step. This also playfully trains an understanding of distance and time. And the little ones become increasingly familiar with cities, motorways and longer trips.

You need:

• writeable tape

• permanent marker

• stick-on Velcro dots

• mini toy car

How it works:

• Stick the tape on the inside of the vehicle above the window where the child can reach it easily.

• Use the marker to note important travel stations from the starting point to the destination on the tape.

• Attach a Velcro dot under each station.

• Attach a Velcro dot to the underside of the toy car.

• With each station reached, the mini car "travels" a bit further — from Velcro dot to Velcro dot until it reaches the destination.

• Hooray, finally there!

Games for the car ride for children aged 4

Whether calmly crafting and letting creativity run free or answering funny quiz questions – there are really great games for 4-year-olds during the car ride:

Mirror, mirror

You will need:

• printed HABAColoring template "Mirror, Mirror"

• felt-tip pens or colored pencils

• lap tray or mat

How to:

1. Coloring pages are a great activity for quiet moments on the highway. Even better if there's a little puzzle hidden. So print the "Mirror, Mirror" coloring template at home.

2. Give your kids colored pencils and a coloring surface, such as a lap tray. Then start coloring.

3. Who notices that there are 5 mistakes in each of the right-hand pictures? Whoever finds them all deserves a little reward.

Funny joke questions for the car trip:

• Which animals have their birthday their whole life? (mayflies)

• Which bags can talk? (chatterboxes)

• Which tree can spin quickly? (somersault)

• Who can smell without a nose? (cheese)

• Which kittens don't scratch? (pussy willows)

Short riddles for in-between:

1. Who wants to protect us from many dangers and stands silently by the road? (traffic signs)

2. I am a thin little man with a round head. If you stroke my head, the whole tuft immediately burns. (match)

3. A large bird deep in the forest calls at night, making an eerie sound. What calls? It sounds like its name. You can read it the same from right to left. (eagle owl)

4. I have many pages and yet I'm not a tree. When you open me, there are words and pictures to see. (book)

Car ride games for kids aged 5 and up

Your kids will completely forget the time on the highway when you occupy them with tricky guessing games or a round of bingo together:

Guess strangers' license plates

How it works:

1. This travel game works best on the highway or on roads with heavy traffic. All players look out the window. As soon as a car passes by, pay attention to the first letters of the license plate.

2. Then the question is: Where might this car be from? Is it a German license plate or does the car come from abroad? For big cities it's easy and parents will usually know the answer.

3. It gets harder with license plates from unfamiliar, smaller districts. The curious can either look them up on the internet, or you can make up funny fantasy names. For example, EH, the license plate from Eisenhüttenstadt in Brandenburg, becomes Entenhausen, the hometown of Donald Duck.

4. The first person to guess a license plate or come up with a fantasy name wins! Then start a new round.

Travel Bingo

You'll need:

• printed HABA game template 'I-Spy Bingo'

• Markers or colored pencils

• Scissors

• Lap tray or mat

How to play:

1. At home, download the HABA game template, print it out, and cut out the individual game squares.

2. As soon as you're on your way to vacation, each player gets a game card and a pen. A lap tray is handy.

3. Then it's 'Eyes open!'. Look carefully at the surroundings outside. As soon as you spot one of the pictured items, you may cross it off or circle it on your card.

4. The first player to complete a row wins the car game. It doesn't matter whether you completed the row horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Car games for the drive for children aged 6 and up

Use the car journey for shared family time where you reminisce, talk to each other, challenge one another, and laugh a lot:

The Family ABC

What you need:

• Printed HABA game template 'Family ABC'

• Felt-tip pens or colored pencils

• Lap tray or mat

How it works:

1. Before the car journey, download the game template 'Family ABC' and print it out. Once you're on the road, the pens come out and the guessing fun begins. Who can remember a family moment that can be described with a word starting with A?

2. Write down your favorite memories letter by letter. A lap tray or a large book as a writing surface is especially handy here. Young children need a bit of help from adults for this car game.

3. The game ends when a family moment has been assigned to every letter. You can also set a time limit if you like. Once time is up, everyone shares what they've written.

Don't answer!

How to play:

1. In this game your instincts are put to the test. First decide who goes first.

2. The first player starts with a simple question that the other players are likely to know the answer to, e.g. 'What was for dinner last night?'.

3. The next player must not give the correct answer, but instead must ask another question, for example 'What's my math teacher's name?','17':'You lose if you accidentally answer a question instead of responding with a counter-question. You'll see - it's harder than it looks!''}

4. Verloren hat, wer versehentlich auf eine Frage antwortet, anstatt mit einer Gegenfrage zu kontern. Ihr werdet sehen – das ist schwieriger als gedacht!

Car games for children aged 7 and up

A long car ride is perfect for playing language games with school-aged children:

Create word chains

How it works:

1. This game is especially popular with primary school children who already know how words are formed. First, decide which player starts.

2. The player chooses a word that is made up of two other words, for example 'child seat'.

3. The next person now chooses a word that begins the way the previous one ended, for example 'seat cushion'.

4. This way you form huge word chains - until a word comes up that none of the players can think of. Then start a new round. How many words will you reach this time?

5. You can make the game a bit harder by setting categories such as 'animals' or 'food'. Word chains in alphabetical order or wild made-up words are also great fun - give it a try!

Games for the car ride for children aged 8 and up

Trivia questions are extremely popular with 8-year-olds and will make your kids forget to ask: How much longer?

The classic: Cities-Countries-Rivers

What you need:

• Paper

• Marker pens or colored pencils

• Lap tray or mat

How to play:

1. Almost everyone knows this classic travel game. Draw a table on your sheet of paper with several categories: city, country, river, and, if you like, additional ones such as name, animal and profession.

2. Then one person says 'A' out loud and counts the rest of the alphabet in their head. Another person shouts 'Stop!' and the letter at which the counter stopped is chosen for the round.

3. Now all players look for words for the categories that begin with this letter. For the letter D, a city would be Dortmund, a country Germany, a river the Danube, etc.

4. Whoever finishes first shouts 'Stop!'. Scores are counted: each unique word is worth ten points; if someone else has the same word, it's only worth five. You can simplify or make the scoring harder depending on the age of your fellow players.

5. The person with the most points wins!

Activity for children aged 10 and up – with quiz games for the whole family

Digital entertainment for children in the car

Tablets and smartphones are popular companions on long car journeys. Especially after rounds of puzzles and storytelling games, Educational apps or short videos for quiet moments. Important: clear agreements about media time, so frustration doesn't arise in the first place. Think about shock protection – for example with a sturdy case or a tablet holder in the car, so nothing gets broken.

Tip: Less is more – short, intentional media sessions make tablet time for children something special!
