My first marble run: watch, explore, play

My first marble run is made entirely of wood and is suitable for children from 18 months. After their first attempts at stacking blocks, children at this age discover further building possibilities. They explore the parts with all their senses, notice shape and size and find out which pieces fit together. With the help of an adult — or even on their own — they can click together a small course for the larger marbles. The pegs of the coloured connector blocks slot into the track sections of the marble run and provide sufficient stability. HABA marble runs are particularly notable because they grow with children and can be expanded and adapted to different ages with interesting extension sets. As children get older, they like to experiment more and soon discover that curves, gradients and height affect how the marble rolls. By trying things out, rebuilding and repeating, children are introduced to basic physical laws. The HABA-Kugelbahn-Systeme are precisely tailored to the age, needs and abilities of each target group and should therefore be regarded as self-contained systems. Even when young builders outgrow the target age for HABA Kullerbü or Meine erste Kugelbahn, it is still possible to continue the marble fun with the classic HABA-Kugelbahn.

Are the HABA-Kugelbahn systems compatible with one another?

The HABA-Kugelbahn systems are precisely tailored to the age, needs and abilities of each target group … and should therefore be regarded as self-contained systems.

Nevertheless, there are various ways to combine Meine erste Kugelbahn, the Kullerbü play system and the classic HABA-Kugelbahn.

The extra-large, non‑swallowable wooden balls (Ø 4,6 cm) included in Meine erste Kugelbahn and the Kullerbü marble run are specially designed for the wide straights, curves and ramps of those two systems. By contrast, the tracks of the classic HABA-Kugelbahn have a much narrower milled groove, through which the nimble colourful marbles (Ø 1 cm) can roll.

So, if Meine erste Kugelbahn or the Kullerbü marble run are combined with the classic HABA-Kugelbahn to create a new, larger marble-run construction, the following should be noted:

Only the small marbles can roll through the entire construction; the large wooden balls cannot. Therefore it is important that the classic HABA-Kugelbahn always forms the starting point of the newly created marble-run layout. While the curves, straights and ramps from all three systems can be combined flexibly, some effects cannot be combined — or only to a limited extent. Two examples: only the large wooden balls can run over the big hill-and-valley ramp or the looping ramp — both Kullerbü elements — whereas the small marbles cannot. Other Kullerbü elements, such as the windmill ramp, naturally allow the marbles to roll through without any problem, but unlike the large Kullerbü wooden balls they cannot trigger the corresponding effect. The reason: their diameter is too small to set the windmills in motion.
